Ever wondered what it's like to step onto a TV set—lights glaring, camera rolling, nerves buzzing—and share your story live with Cleveland viewers? I lived that exhilarating experience recently on New Day Cleveland Live on Fox 8. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look and some "teacher advice" in case you ever get your five minutes in the local spotlight.
My Journey to New Day Cleveland (Live!!!!)
Just getting the message on Instagram for New Day Cleveland sent my heart into overdrive. What an honor—and my nerves! And, a question filled my mind. How did they find me? (I found out later from Bella, the producer, she found me on Instagram somehow!)
This has been on my business vision board for YEARS. I mean, even when I had my little shoppe on the island of Put-in-Bay, my dear friend and employee, Anne, gave me the idea about this show. As a local entrepreneur, I knew this was a huge opportunity. Yet the reality of going on air, seemed like a long-shot. BUT, then it became a reality!!!! WOOHOO!
After plenty of prep: outfit picked out days in advance, friends and family notified, and practicing my key points aloud to myself - I arrived at Fox 8’s station. The professionalism, friendly staff, and the buzzing studio energy was so amazing. My husband Tommy and I set up our products on the big glass table and then waited in the Green Room.
When the segment started, everything happened in a blur. It was both nerve-wracking and thrilling. I honestly barely remembered what I had said to Natalie, the host of the show.
Throughout the whirlwind, I learned a little bit about what it takes be on local TV. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, artist, or advocate, if you ever join a session like New Day Cleveland Live, maybe these tips will help you make the most of your big chance.

Tips for Making the Most of a Five-Minute Live Segment
1. Practice. This helped me!
The segment actually seemed to last a lot longer than the quick five minutes. For me, it felt like an hour! But, days leading up to it, I just kept reminding myself "I know all there is to know about my products and my business. Pretend Natalie is just a new customer at the Farmer's Market. AND, I've been doing this for 13 years, so I GOT THIS!!!
Practice at home—aloud, in front of a mirror, or even record yourself. If nerves threaten to take over on New Day Cleveland Live, like they did with me a bit in the beginning, your preparation will carry you through.
2. Dress the Part
While you don’t need to wear a three-piece suit, keep your look polished. I also wanted to "match my brand," so I wore a color that matched my brand/label colors. Subtle, but not too "in your face." Avoid excessive jewelry or noisy accessories, since microphones pick up every sound.
For me, choosing a professional but comfortable outfit helped boost my confidence. If you’ll be showing a product or demo, think through how you’ll move or display items with style and ease during the segment. I actually practiced on my dining room table with the entire setup and moved around it like I saw on others' do in previous interviews. I also knew which side of my body would be showing, so made sure my hair was tucked behind that ear, although, I am not even sure if it stayed put when I think about it.
3. Arrive Early
On my New Day Cleveland appearance, I made sure to arrive well ahead of my scheduled time. By arriving early, you get a chance to relax, find your bearings, and chat with production staff. Plus, there is time to nervous-pee beforehand.
4. Connect With the Host & others! They're people, too!
The hosts are there to guide the conversation and make you feel at ease. Introduce yourself before the cameras roll, if there is time. I'm not super outgoing, and actually shy at first, so I let them approach me.
During the interview, speak naturally, listen carefully, and respond directly to their prompts. If you get tripped up, don’t freeze! Hosts like Natalie are true professionals; they’ll help steer you back on track seamlessly. AND THANK GOD SHE DID!!!!
5. Use Props or Visuals Wisely
Bringing a product or prop? Keep it simple and organized. Prepare a neat display that stands out on camera but doesn’t distract. (Remember, I set my display up in my house first - in several different ways - as practice.) During my segment, I laid out a handful of best-selling items within easy reach to demonstrate key features. Plus, the crew at New Day Cleveland helped me set it all up before going on air. My husband also helped and when my nerves took over before the show, he ended up finishing the setup for me. Thank GOD he was there. I would recommend taking someone along for moments like this. Plus, the crew was also so helpful and kind.
6. You Know More Than You Think
Avoid jargon and be ready to explain what you do in simple, relatable terms. Remember YOU are the expert about your business.
If you stumble over a word, like I totally did, just press on—viewers are forgiving, and authenticity reads better than a rigid script. On my New Day Cleveland Live spot, answering questions from Natalie, about my business, drew a great response and several new followers.
7. All You Can Ever Do Is Your Best
You can't really mess this up. I was fearful of saying something "stupid" or talking too much or even saying a swear word - out of nervousness. But, I focused on Natalie and allowed her to lead, instead of worrying about my "message." I was just honored to be there!
The Power of Mindset
Many people imagine that only natural performers shine on shows like New Day Cleveland Live, but the key ingredient is BE YOURSELF. Run through your message, anticipate possible questions, and visualize yourself answering confidently.
- Rehearse, but don’t memorize: You want to sound prepared, not robotic. Think bullet points, not full monologue.
- Anticipate technical needs: If you plan to demo something, alert the studio in advance to ensure the setup works.
- Take deep breaths: Moments before you go live, pause and breathe deeply. This simple act helps lower stress and focus your energy.
Believe me, nerves are completely normal. Mine were THROUGH THE ROOF! The adrenaline can actually work in your favor and give your presentation energy and spark. Maybe this is what happened to me? All I know, is I did say a few prayers the days leading up to it, said them again in the car ride, and then again in the Green Room. I asked for my ancestors to guide me and say the BEST things for the Greater Good of All.
Making the Most of Your Media Moment
Capture screenshots or ask for a digital copy of the segment. Don’t be shy about promoting your big moment—your audience will appreciate a peek behind the scenes. SOOO many people asked me for the link, so I posted and emailed my customers about it, too.
Unexpected Lessons From My New Day Cleveland Live Appearance
Despite all my planning, a few surprises taught me invaluable lessons:
- Silence backstage is golden. The few quiet moments before going live gave me space to collect my thoughts and say my prayers.
- Things will go “off script.” THERE IS NO SCRIPT! And, there shouldn't be, actually. It's just you and another delightful human talking about your business.
- Gratitude opens doors. Always thank the staff and host, on-air and off. They’ll remember your professionalism for next time.
Conclusion
Appearing on New Day Cleveland Live was an invigorating and nerve-wracking experience that I'll be forever grateful for. I'm feeling the love of Cleveland BIG TIME after this one! I truly hope YOU get your time to shine, too. I'll be here rooting for you!!!!!!
